    ECHI-1, ECHI-2 and ECHIM

    The ECHI (European Community Health Indicators) project was carried out within the framework of the Health Monitoring Programme and the Community Public Health Programme 2003-2008.

    The result is a comprehensive list of indicators (the "long list") for the field of public health, arranged according to a conceptual view on health and health determinants. From this list of indicators, a so-called “short list” was selected for priority implementation. It consists of approximately 80 indicators. The data for 40 of these were collated from existing databases and can currently be accessed on the EU Public Health website (ECHI).

    The ECHI project was carried out in two phases, from 1998 – 2004. It was coordinated by RIVM, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands, and involved the 15 Member States of the EU with Hungary and Norway.

    For more information about the ECHI project, look at the ECHI report first phase and ECHI report second phase.

    In addition, as a part of the second phase of the ECHI project, the ICHI-2 database (International Compendium of Health Indicators) was developed.

    The work has been continued in a new project under the name ECHIM (European Community Indicators and Monitoring), coordinated by the Finnish Public Health Institute.

    1. to define the areas of data and indicators to be included, following a set of explicit criteria;
    2. to define generic indicators in these areas, again following these criteria; and
    3. as a novel element, to imply a high degree of flexibility in the indicator set, by defining subsets of indicators, or ‘user-windows’, tuned to specific users.

    EUHSID project

    The EUHSID project maintains and updates a database of the characteristics of all Health Interview Surveys (HIS) and Health Examination Surveys (HES) in Europe.
