The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment RIVM in Bilthoven, the Netherlands is a leading centre of expertise in the fields of public health, nutrition and environmental protection.
RIVM's mission is to undertake research that will benefit society and the environment. RIVM mainly works for the Dutch government and shares knowledge with other governments and institutions around the world. The results of the research, monitoring, modelling and risk assessment undertaken here are used to underpin policy on public health, food, safety and the environment. RIVM also performs research on behalf of international organisations, such as the European Union, WHO and OECD.
The mandate of the Centre for Public Health Forecasting (PHF) is to collect, analyse, integrate and disseminate knowledge about public health and health care, in order to support Dutch health policy making.
In 2006 the fourth edition of the national public health status and forecasting report has been launched. Previous editions were published in 1993, 1997, 2002.
The Centre publishes and maintains several web-based public health information systems, such as Public Health Compass and Atlas of Health and Health Care, as well as Cost of illness in the Netherlands and Dutch Health Care Performance.
International projects by the Centre for Public Health Forecasting include, among others, the ECHI and ICHI projects. International comparisons are an important element in the work of the Centre, for instance: How do we do? Health in the EU from a Dutch perspective.
